I recently came across some information about Thomas Shader Jr., one of the victims of the Edmund post office tragedy in 1986. It's been over three decades, and I still find it hard to fathom how an event like this could happen. I never knew Shader personally, but from what I've read, he seemed like a remarkable person who brought passion and energy into everything he did, especially his love for cycling.
His involvement with the Oklahoma Bicycle Society speaks volumes about his character and how he spent his time engaging with others and doing what he loved. I can only imagine how his presence must be missed by those who rode alongside him. Reflecting on this, I wonder how many lives have been indirectly affected by the loss of each person that day, like the void left in communities and social circles.
It's troubling to think about the warning signs and whether anyone noticed them in Sherrill’s behavior or if they felt powerless to intervene. While the conversation has since shifted to workplace safety, it's crucial we aren’t just talking about policy, but also making sure people feel safe and supported enough to speak up. My heart goes out to Shader's family and friends. Remembering him makes me hope we're learning and applying these lessons so that no more families suffer such loss.
