I recently read about Logan Jacob Hinrichs' tragic passing, and my heart goes out to all his loved ones affected by this loss. Being only 14, Logan was at an age where dreams seem within reach, and it's heartbreaking to imagine the paths he might have taken. I can’t stop thinking about how crucial it is to have open conversations about mental health with our teens, even when everything seems fine on the surface. Logan's love for music, sports, and his dream of becoming a Marine Biologist paint a picture of a vibrant young life full of potential. It's reassuring to see his school district and community rallying around his family, providing much-needed support and counseling services during this tough time. I hope that such initiatives become more commonplace in schools everywhere so that kids have somewhere to turn before they feel truly lost. For everyone in the Red Wing and Maiden Rock areas, know that people across the country are sending their thoughts and strength to you. Let's all remember Logan by advocating for and nurturing spaces where our youth feel safe to share their struggles.

It's been almost a decade since Logan Hinrichs' tragic passing, and I still think about how deeply it affected our community. I remember attending the candlelight vigil in Maiden Rock; it was such a devastating time, yet so heartwarming to see how many people came together to remember him. Logan's passion for marine biology was known by so many, and it breaks my heart that he never got to pursue that dream. I wish there had been more awareness and resources back then for mental health, especially for someone so young. It’s encouraging to see schools now focusing more on providing support for students. It just makes me wonder, could things have been different if the conversations about mental health had started earlier? Hoping for continued change so no more families have to endure this pain. Sending love and strength to Logan's family and friends, always.
