I'm really struck by the role that surveillance footage played in Nya Hammond's case. It's hard to imagine what might have happened if that footage didn't exist. The ability to see the gray Nissan Maxima drive in and out of the parking lot prior to the shooting seems to have been a critical piece of evidence in identifying Pierre Gardner as the suspect. It's incredibly telling that they were seen entering the car together before the tragedy unfolded. While it's obviously heartbreaking that the footage captured this horrific act, it underscores just how crucial surveillance can be in piecing together the events leading up to a crime. My heart goes out to Nya's family and friends, who not only have to deal with this unfathomable loss but also have their loved one's final moments recorded. I really hope this case brings more attention to the importance of domestic violence awareness and prevention.
