Has anyone else been following the case of Deputy Sheriff Wilfred E. Rorison? It's so devastating to think about the risks law enforcement officers took back in the Prohibition era, and the story of his encounter with Paul Hickey is truly unsettling. What stands out to me is how brazen Hickey was, opening fire on Deputy Rorison and the agents. It's hard to imagine the fear and chaos of the moment, especially knowing Deputy Rorison didn't survive.
What's even more puzzling is the acquittal of the additional suspect. How does someone get charged with conspiracy in a murder but only end up with a sentence for manufacturing liquor? It makes you wonder about the evidence or maybe the attitudes towards prohibition laws at that time. My heart goes out to Deputy Rorison's family—it's a heavy reminder of the risks officers faced, not just from the moonshiners but also from systemic hurdles in the justice process.
