I've been thinking a lot about the impact that John T. Williams' tragic death had on the Seattle community, especially the Indigenous community. It's heartbreaking to see such a talented artist, someone who was continuing a centuries-old tradition, have their life end so abruptly. Williams wasn’t just carrying a piece of cedar and a pocketknife; he was carrying his culture and heritage. I can't imagine the pain his family and the Nuu-chah-nulth tribe must have felt, losing someone who was not only a beloved member of their family but also a custodian of their cultural legacy.
It's been over a decade, yet the echoes of what happened at Boren Avenue and Howell Street are still felt. This shouldn't just be a statistic in police reform discussions. It was a man's life, culture, and craftsmanship. I hope we can continue to honor his memory by ensuring that accountability and meaningful change come out of such tragedies. The $1.5 million settlement can't replace the loss, but maybe it's a step towards recognizing and addressing the deeper issues within law enforcement. I often wonder how the art world and Indigenous communities continue to remember him and his legacy.
