I can't stop thinking about how Juan Carlos Melgoza was just outside his neighborhood grocery store, a place where many of us go without a second thought, and ended up losing his life so senselessly. It really hit me when I learned he was simply standing near the entrance, possibly just stepping out to grab something or meet someone briefly. The randomness of it all and the fact that it unfolded in a public space with potential witnesses makes my heart ache for his loved ones. It’s unsettling to think about how something like wearing a color could lead to such a tragic consequence. I hope that this case not only brings some semblance of justice for Juan’s family but also serves as a catalyst for addressing the deeply-rooted gang issues in Pasco. Gang violence has such devastating impacts on entire communities, stripping away the sense of safety we should all feel. My thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragedy, and I hope that community leaders are genuinely working towards creating a safer environment for everyone in Pasco.
