It's been a while, but I can't stop thinking about the role that medication (or the lack thereof) played in the tragic events leading to Joel Rodriguez's death. It seems like Eduardo Valencia's mental health was in a crisis mode for months, especially after he stopped taking his meds in August. Can you imagine the fear and confusion he must have been feeling, thinking a cartel was out to get his family? It doesn't excuse his actions in any way, of course. My heart goes out to Joel and his loved ones; it's a devastating loss. But it makes me wonder how many people out there are silently suffering from severe mental health issues without the help they desperately need. If only there had been some intervention or more awareness of the signs Valencia was showing. Perhaps this tragedy could have been avoided. Thoughts and prayers for everyone touched by this senseless act.
