I've been following Wesley Gennings' case closely, and each time I read about it, my heart goes out to his family. What's been on my mind lately is how the legal system decided to handle the case. Charging Diante Pellum as an adult at only 15 was a pretty big move, given it hadn't been done for such a young offender in King County for years. I can't imagine how difficult it was for the judge to make that decision, balancing the crime's seriousness with the fact that we're talking about kids here. And with that, I really feel for Leilani Gennings. Her dissatisfaction with the sentences is totally understandable. The gap between the crime's brutality and the sentences handed down must feel enormous to a grieving mother. It makes me wonder how the justice system could better address such complexities and provide some sense of closure for families like the Gennings.
