Did anyone else notice how the location where Santiago Delgado was killed seemed to be a hotspot for violence during 2012? I looked up the area, and it seems like there were numerous incidents reported around there. It’s deeply unsettling to think about how unsafe these neighborhoods felt at the time. Watching the news back then, it sometimes felt like there was a story every night about another tragedy like this. It's so important to remember that behind every statistic, there are real people like Santiago who had families, dreams, and lives cut short. I can't imagine the pain his loved ones must still feel. Instead of just adding to the numbers, I wonder if there’s more we can do to keep the conversation alive about preventative measures and the root causes of violence. Every person deserves to feel secure in their community, and it’s heartbreaking that many in Chicago in 2012—and possibly even now—feel so vulnerable.
