I came across a part of the Standard Gravure shooting case that's been on my mind and felt compelled to share here. William Spencer Ganote Sr., who was one of the tragic victims, has an incredibly heartwrenching backstory that’s been overshadowed by some of the broader discussions about the shooting.
A lot of us might not have known about Ganote’s accident back in 1976, where he lost all his fingers in a pressroom accident. The fact that he not only continued working as a pressman for so many years but also pursued painting despite such a personal loss speaks volumes about his resilience and dedication. It’s stories like his that seem to get lost in the broader narrative about workplace violence and legal battles.
I can only imagine the strength and passion he must have had—both for his job and his art. Thinking about the potential he could have continued to offer to his community is truly saddening. My heart goes out to his loved ones who had to endure such a loss, both then and now. Would love to hear any thoughts from those who might know more about his life or have reflections on these aspects of the case.
