I’ve been thinking a lot about the role that community and schools play in preventing these kinds of tragedies. It seems so often we hear about young people making irreversible decisions that devastate everyone involved. Monticello is a small town, and I imagine everyone knew Matthew, either personally or through someone else. I wonder if there were any outreach programs or resources for teens like Dylan that could have made a difference beforehand. It’s unimaginable what Matthew’s family and fiancé must be going through. Losing someone so young and full of potential must be incredibly difficult, especially under such violent circumstances. I hope this case serves as a wake-up call to communities about the importance of supporting at-risk youth before they reach a breaking point. My heart goes out to all affected—may they find strength and support in each other.
