It's so difficult to wrap my head around the events in Pine Island. A lot of focus has been on what led up to that terrible day, but I've been thinking a lot about the role of the larger community in supporting young people like Nicholas and Kayla. High school seems like ages ago, but it's actually such a foundational time, and they were on the cusp of establishing their lives. Were there enough support systems in place in school or within the community after graduation? It just makes me wonder if something, anything could have been done differently to prevent such a devastating outcome. As a community, it's important to reflect on whether we're providing the emotional and mental support young adults need, especially since transitioning from high school to university can be overwhelming. My heart goes out to their friends and family — hopefully, we can learn from this and honor Nick and Kayla by ensuring that all young people feel valued and supported.
