I came across the case of Officer James R. White from 1901, and one detail that really stands out to me is the involvement of the 14th Cavalry from Fort Riley. It's so unsettling how a group meant to protect could be involved in causing such a tragic event. I know they were off-duty, but the fact that a disturbance escalated to such violence leaves so many questions. Was this a sign of tensions between the military and local law enforcement at the time? It's chilling to think how quickly things can get out of control. My heart goes out to the families of Officers White and Cooper. They responded to a call just doing their jobs, and unfortunately, that cost them their lives. I hope their service isn’t forgotten as we reflect on the complexities and pressures faced by those in uniform, both in the military and in civilian police work.
