I’ve been reading about the tragic events that unfolded on February 23, 2017, in Newton, Kansas, and my heart goes out to the loved ones of Jason Stubby, Nelton Dean Lemons, and Michael Lemons. A detail that stands out to me is the presence of three survivors, all female, in the house during the attack. Imagining the trauma they must have faced is truly unsettling. They not only lost friends or acquaintances in such a violent manner but also narrowly escaped harm themselves. It's hard not to think about the support they’ll need to heal from this. Witnessing such a horrifying event can have long-lasting effects, and I hope they are receiving the help and care they need to navigate through this traumatic experience. While the investigation has ruled out other suspects, and the community might feel safer, these survivors are left to process the events of that night. I wonder how they’re doing now and hope that with time and support, they find some measure of peace. It’s crucial that we remember these aspects of the case and continue to hold space for those directly affected by such tragic events.
