I've been thinking a lot about Sixto D. Roman's case lately and wanted to share some thoughts. It's always so painful to hear about someone losing their life, but it feels even more tragic when it happens in public spaces that should be safe for everyone. Sixto's murder in the Humboldt Park neighborhood highlights how pervasive and insidious the issue of gun violence is in our cities. The neighborhood has struggled with gang activity and violence, but it’s important not to lose sight of Sixto as a person amidst the statistics. Behind every number is a life with connections, dreams, and loved ones. His family and friends are likely still grappling with their loss, trying to find a semblance of peace and justice in a system that so often fails them. I hope sharing stories like Sixto's brings more attention to this crisis and motivates community leaders to work even harder in their efforts for change. I wish there were more resources available for residents, more opportunities for young people to escape cycles of violence. It’s a difficult path, but one worth pursuing for the sake of all those threatened by the epidemic of gun violence. Let's keep his memory alive by advocating for safer, more supportive communities.
