I've been thinking a lot about Shameka’s family and friends lately. I can't even begin to imagine the shock and grief they're going through. Losing a loved one is never easy, but the suddenness and violence of this loss must be overwhelming. I hope they're taking care of each other and finding some comfort in their shared memories of her. It's moments like these that make me hope the community comes together to support those affected. It's also terrifying to think about how someone with a past conviction related to violent crime was out and able to harm someone again. We really need to have serious discussions about how we handle re-entry into society after incarceration and ensure there’s a stronger system in place to prevent repeat offenses. Hoping for justice for Shameka and some peace for everyone who cared about her.
