Did anyone else notice the parallels between Michael’s bravery and his military background? As a Marine vet, he had already dedicated part of his life to serving and protecting others—what a testament to his character that he acted so selflessly yet again at Sparks Middle School. It’s hard not to think about the fact that he had served in Afghanistan, a warzone, only to face this tragedy back home in Nevada. It’s a sad reminder of how heroes come in many forms and sometimes pay the utmost price even in seemingly safe environments. My heart truly goes out to his family, friends, and the students who witnessed such courage and loss.
