I've been following the details of the tragic death that took place at the Heritage Estates Apartment Complex, and one aspect that really stands out to me is the role that alcohol played in this senseless act. It's just so upsetting to see how a simple gathering of friends can turn so quickly into a nightmare because of alcohol. Reports indicate that Douglas Smalley had been drinking before the confrontation, which makes you wonder how much influence the alcohol had on everyone involved. For something so innocent as hanging out with friends to escalate into a fatal shooting is just shocking. My thoughts go out to Dan Archie's family and loved ones; losing someone so young and full of promise must be immeasurably painful. If only things had gone differently that night, perhaps under different circumstances or with cooler heads, Dan might still be with us today. It's a tragic reminder for all of us to stay vigilant when alcohol is involved, not just for ourselves but for our friends too. If we ever see tempers starting to rise or things getting heated, it's critical to step in or walk away before it crosses a point of no return.
