I can't get over the fact that the temporary protection order was denied. Why on earth was this family left unprotected? Phoukeo did exactly what she was supposed to do — she took the steps to seek help and alert the authorities, yet the system failed her and her children in the worst possible way. It's terrifying to think about how many others out there are in similar situations and may not get the protection they desperately need. I really hope this case leads to some changes in how protective orders are evaluated and granted. No family should have to endure such terror and loss. My heart goes out to the relatives and friends who now have to live with this unbearable loss.
