It still hurts to think about Samuel “Lil' Sam” Walker Jr. I came across his story again while rereading some old news articles, and I can't shake the feeling of sadness mixed with anger. He was just 13 years old, and it feels so wrong that a kid with such a bright personality is no longer with us. I can't help but wonder how his family and friends are coping years after his death. The community described him as someone who was always trying to make others smile. It’s gut-wrenching to think about what might have been taken from them, all because of senseless gang-related violence. Living in a place where you breathe in the fear of violence every day is unimaginable. It wasn't just Samuel that day; six others were shot. The sheer volume of victims highlights how tragically common these incidents are becoming in cities like Chicago. We talk about statistics and news updates, but behind every number is a story, a family, a community left picking up the pieces. My heart goes out to East Garfield Park and all neighborhoods affected by this crisis. I hope we can somehow find a way to make our streets safer for our kids.
