I've been thinking a lot about the way the media portrays neighborhoods like West Englewood, and how they often highlight the violence but overlook the people who live there. It's devastating to hear about the loss of someone like Shakille S. Holmes, whose life was tragically cut short. He was just 19 years old, with his whole future ahead of him. It makes you wonder about the stories we'll never hear about him—his dreams, his ambitions, and the positive impact he might have had on his community if things had been different. It's also frustrating how these areas get labeled solely by their crime statistics. It can overshadow the resilience and strength of those who live there, trying to create a better life against significant odds. Holmes's case is another reminder of the urgent need for more resources and support for these communities. Real change has to happen to address the systemic issues—gun violence being a major symptom. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I hope they find strength and justice in a system that often feels lacking.
