I recently came across this old case from the '80s about Scott Darwin Michael and couldn't help but think about the devastating impact this must have had on Scott's friend, Jon Kleinhans. While Scott's family faced unimaginable loss, Jon witnessed something horrific at such a young age. Being only 13, how does one even begin to process seeing your friend in that situation? I can't stop thinking about how Jon might have carried this trauma into adulthood, the nightmares, or the feelings of guilt and fear. It's crucial to remember not just the victim but also others who are affected in ways we might not fully understand. It makes me reflect on how little support systems and counseling for students existed at that time. Hopefully, things have improved since then, but it does leave me wondering how Jon and others around him coped during a time when mental health wasn't as openly discussed. If anyone has any insights or resources on how survivors of such events were supported back then, I'd be interested to learn more.
