I've been thinking about the role bystanders played in the tragic death of Camille Harrell. It's tough not to wonder what could have been different if someone nearby had acted—or even if they did and we just don’t know the full story. There seems to be so much we don’t understand about what was happening around that motel on East Colfax.
It's eerie to think about how many people might have seen something but didn’t realize the gravity of it. I’ve stayed at motels like the Sand and Sage before, and there’s always someone hanging around. Did any of them hear Camille shouting those chilling words, "Well, get me then," or see her running to that alley? If so, how could they have just done nothing?
My heart goes out to Cheryl Webb and the family. The pain of losing someone so unexpectedly and violently—I can’t even begin to fathom it. Perhaps more awareness can prevent something like this from happening again, though I wish it didn’t take such a loss to learn these lessons. If only courage and compassion could have intervened sooner.
