Has anyone else looked into the possible significance of the rusted .22 rifle that Thomas was reportedly carrying? It's detailed in those sightings from the Ogden stockyards, and I'm curious if anyone ever verified if it belonged to him, or if it was just picked up along his route.
I find it odd, considering he left the ranch with no extra clothing or food, yet had this rifle. Could he have taken it from the ranch and no one noticed? Or maybe he acquired it somewhere during his journey to Ogden? It seems like an unusual item for a 12-year-old to have, especially since he was previously known to stow away on trucks or trains—those don't seem to be situations where you'd need a gun.
If anyone has more info or insight on this aspect, I'd appreciate it. Could be a small piece that's significant in piecing Thomas's movements together.
Has anyone else noticed how unusual it is that Thomas Novak was spotted carrying a rusted .22 rifle while on the run? I remember reading somewhere that it wasn't uncommon for kids growing up in rural areas back then to handle firearms, but it's still surprising he'd have one with him if he was planning to travel light. The fact that he was also carrying cattails intrigues me. Any thoughts on why he might have chosen to take those specific items? Could they hold any significance, or was he just picking up whatever was available? The idea that he might have been trying to survive on his own crossed my mind, but taking cattails doesn't quite fit that theory, since they aren't exactly useful for keeping warm or feeding yourself long-term. Just trying to understand the mindset behind his choices and actions during his attempt to leave.
