Hey everyone,
I've been following the thread about Ronnie Finch and wanted to touch on a different angle that's been on my mind. Ronnie's death, like so many others on the South Side, brings up the critical issue of how youth in these neighborhoods are often caught in the crossfire of circumstances beyond their control.
What's heartbreaking is how the lack of access to positive social outlets and economic opportunities can steer young people, even those with the best intentions, into perilous situations. I remember reading that Ronnie was known for being a genuinely nice guy, which makes it all the more tragic that he became a victim of the violence plaguing his community.
We often talk about enforcement and crime rates, but less about the everyday environments these young folks grow up in. What if we invested more in youth outreach programs, mentorship, and education initiatives in these neighborhoods? Maybe we need to look at this as not just a policing issue, but a community development challenge.
Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts. Could community-led initiatives make a bigger difference than what we've been seeing? How do we give our youth a fighting chance at a safe future? Ronnie deserved better, and so does everyone in his community.
Stay safe everyone.
