I've been thinking a lot about the Serrano family tragedy, particularly the bravery Jessica Serrano showed on that awful night. She had been through so much with Joseph Castorena, fearing for her safety and still, she had the presence of mind to call the police when she found his keys. It's such a painful reminder of how real and terrifying domestic violence can be, and the lengths some abusers will go to maintain control. My heart goes out to Jessica and the children. They’re the ones trying to piece their lives back together now. I’m glad Castorena was finally held accountable, but I just wish it didn't take such a tragic loss for justice to be served. These systems need to do more to protect people like Jessica before it comes to something like this. I hope she can find some solace in knowing that he won't be able to hurt them or anyone else ever again.
