I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact of mental health on both the victims and the perpetrators of crimes, especially in cases like the tragic shooting of Officers King and Smith. It's so alarming how untreated mental illness can escalate to such violent outcomes. My heart goes out to Officer King's family, especially his sons. Losing a parent is a lifelong challenge, and it's incredibly unfair that their lives were changed in such a drastic and sudden way. The fact that John Hyde's paranoid schizophrenia went unaddressed until it was too late raises questions about the support systems in place—or lack thereof—for individuals with severe mental illnesses. I wonder what changes have been implemented in Albuquerque since this tragedy to better address mental health crises. It’s crucial that we not only remember the service and sacrifice of Officers King and Smith but also push for improvements to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
