I think it's important to talk about the real victim here—Jose "Ruben" Diaz. By all accounts, Ruben was a gentle soul, dedicated to his family and work. It's tough to wrap my head around how someone could lose their life in such a random, senseless act of violence. His kids are now left without a father, and that’s a void that can never be filled. I read how his friends and co-workers spoke highly of him, saying he was irreplaceable and full of kindness. Stories like his remind us that we often don't know the battles others are facing, like Donald Duquette's mental health struggles and substance abuse. But that doesn't change the fact that Ruben's life was undeservingly cut short. How do we as a society better protect innocent lives and support those struggling with mental illness before something like this happens again?
