Has anyone else been looking into the role of the Bayard Police Department in Choppy's case? It just seems like there were so many dropped balls here, especially with the report Peggy Humble filed a month before the shooting. If Chief Cornel Stemley hadn't been placed on leave right after getting the report about threats against Trujillo, could this tragedy have been prevented? It’s disturbing to think that maybe a bit more attention to the situation might have changed the outcome. My heart goes out to Jerimiah's family and friends who are not only grieving his loss but also have to deal with these questions. It's just so frustrating to see systemic issues exacerbate such personal tragedies. Any other insights or information would be appreciated.
Hey everyone,
I've been reading up on the tragic shooting that happened last year involving Jerimiah "Choppy" Mohr, and one thing that's been on my mind is the role of Bayard PD Chief Cornel Stemley's administrative leave right around the time when Trujillo's mom reported threats from the Mohr family. It's so unsettling to think how different things might have been if the situation had been followed up more thoroughly.
What really breaks my heart is knowing that Cornel was placed on leave the very same day that key concerns were raised—it feels like a missed opportunity to possibly de-escalate things before they erupted so violently. I can't help but wonder whether the administrative, procedural stuff sometimes gets in the way of real safety and justice in our communities. It seems there was a chance for intervention that might have changed the outcome for Jerimiah and everyone involved.
For those of you familiar with law enforcement processes, how common is it for something like an administrative leave to totally stall an investigation? And what more could have been done to protect Choppy and his family before everything spiraled out of control?
Thinking of Choppy's family and everyone he touched in his life. It’s clear he was cherished and is deeply missed. ?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
I can't stop thinking about the circumstances that led to the tragic shooting of Jerimiah "Choppy" Mohr. It just makes you wonder how things could have been different if the authorities had been able to fully investigate the threats reportedly made against Joseph Trujillo back in February. If Chief Stemley hadn't been on administrative leave right after the initial report from Trujillo's mother, maybe some intervention could have prevented this senseless violence. It's tough knowing that a young life with such promise and compassion was lost due to a chain of events that might have been interrupted. My thoughts are with Jerimiah's family and friends. The community has truly lost a remarkable young man.
