I’ve been thinking a lot about the community's response after the tragic events at the Oregon Museum Tavern in 1981. Lori J. Cunningham, taken so suddenly at just 22, seemed like such a bright young woman with a promising career ahead of her as a paralegal. It’s hard to fathom the loss her family and friends must have felt—and still feel—each day. What stands out to me is how the local community rallied around the families of the victims and supported efforts to ensure they were properly memorialized. The joint memorial wall at Mountain View Cemetery is a testament to such community spirit. The Greater Portland Area chapter of Parents of Murdered Children did an admirable job in making sure these victims aren’t forgotten. I hope Lori’s family found some comfort in knowing that their daughter's legacy endures and that the community valued her as much as they did. It serves as a sobering reminder of how essential it is to hold space for healing and remembrance, not just in the immediate aftermath but long into the future. Sending thoughts to anyone who was impacted by this tragedy.
