Reading about Jose Rodriguez's tragic murder and the broader surge of violence in Chicago back in 2016 really hit me hard. It’s so painful to see how many lives were impacted by the gun violence that dominated the city that year. I think about all the families who were affected, like Jose’s, and it genuinely makes me wonder what more can be done to prevent these senseless deaths. The fact that the majority of these homicides were due to gunfire is startling. It highlights just how pervasive the issue of illegal firearms was and still is in certain parts of Chicago. I can’t help but feel that there needs to be a stronger push towards creating sustainable, community-driven programs aimed at reducing gang influence and offering better opportunities for youth. This needs to happen alongside any policing strategies if we're ever going to see lasting change. Sending my deepest sympathies to the Rodriguez family and all the others who’ve suffered over these years. I hope that as a community, we can work towards solutions that not only bring justice but also prevent this level of violence from continuing to claim more lives.
