I was reading through the old newspaper articles about the Cass, West Virginia tragedy and found something quite perplexing. The reports describe Tiny McCoy as being strangely composed during his trial and confession. It’s hard not to wonder what was going through his mind. How does someone reconcile taking the lives of their own family members? It’s truly difficult to fathom. What I can't wrap my head around is the detail about his attempt to take his own life after the murders. How does someone summon the courage to inflict such harm on others and then try to turn it on themselves? It makes you question the mental state and desperation he must have felt in that moment. The whole situation is so tragic and unsettling. My heart goes out to the Totten and McCoy families who had to endure such a loss. When emotions run this high, it’s vital to remember the people behind the headlines and the ripples of pain that events like these cause in their wake.
