I was reading about John Mackey, the young man who lost his life in Humboldt Park back in 2016, and it really got me thinking. It’s just devastating how these neighborhoods have been caught in such a vicious cycle of violence. I remember that year all too well, with news of shootings seemingly every day. What stands out is the sheer number of families torn apart by the loss, like John’s family. What frustrates me is the lack of resources these communities faced. I mean, how can we expect to break this cycle without investing in education, job opportunities, and support systems for young people? It’s so clear that we need to dig deeper into the root causes rather than just focus on the aftermath. Would love to hear if others think there’s been any progress since then, or if more needs to be done. Families like the Mackeys deserve answers and, more importantly, change.
