I've been thinking a lot about the role mental health might have played in the tragic Gilbert case. Gene Gilbert's life experiences, especially his stint in the military and the back injury, seemed to put him under a tremendous amount of psychological strain. We often hear about the invisible scars left by such experiences, and I can't help but wonder if there were any opportunities for intervention that might have been missed. It's devastating to think that Bonnie and the kids might have been living in fear leading up to that terrible day. I hope that looking into Gene's mental health background and understanding what pressures were building up might shine some light on why someone would commit such an unthinkable act. It's so important for communities to focus on mental health resources and support, especially for those who might be silently suffering. My heart truly goes out to the friends and families who had to endure this senseless tragedy. They deserved so much better, as did Bonnie and the children.
