I’ve been thinking a lot about the lives of Marilyn's kids and how heart-wrenching it is that such vibrant young lives were cut short. I can't imagine the heartbreak and loss felt by their school friends and teachers who suddenly had to deal with the absence of these three wonderful children. It’s chilling to think that they were just visiting for a joyous family gathering, with their whole lives ahead of them, only for it to end in such a tragic way. I hope the community continues to honor their memories and offers support to those left behind to pick up the pieces after this tragedy. Thoughts and love to everyone in Algona trying to find peace in the aftermath.
I've been looking into the Dreesman family case from Algona around 1987, and one thing that stands out to me is how the family dynamic might have played a role in this tragedy. It seems like Robert struggled a lot with feeling overshadowed by his sister, Marilyn, and perhaps even her children. It's just eerie to think that sometimes the hurt people carry inside can boil over in such a violent way.
From what I've gathered, Robert was always a bit on the fringes—not quite fitting in with the path he wanted to take in life. Having pursued so many different academic paths, yet still feeling isolated, must have been difficult. It seems like he was searching for something, perhaps acceptance or recognition, that he just never found. It makes you wonder what signs might have been overlooked or how things might have been different if support systems were different back then.
To think that no one saw this coming is chilling. I feel so much for the friends and extended family who were left to pick up the pieces and try to make sense of such a senseless act, especially during what should have been a joyful family gathering. It's a stark reminder that issues can often remain hidden beneath the surface in families, and the importance of reaching out for help when we need it.
