I’ve been diving into the details of the Utah POW massacre, and one aspect that really caught my attention is the aftercare—or lack thereof—for Bertucci. From what I gather, his documented history of disciplinary issues and his expressed hatred for Germans should have raised some serious red flags before something tragic happened. Why wasn’t there more oversight? It’s baffling and disheartening to think that someone with such a troubling past could be left in a position of power, especially over vulnerable POWs like Ernst Fuchs and his fellow soldiers, who were just waiting to go home. I can’t imagine the fear and confusion those men must have felt in their final moments, or the pain their families faced having to hear about it. It really makes me question how many other incidents might have happened if this one hadn't been so devastatingly tragic. Thoughts?
