The late Lee McCullum’s story, while deeply tragic, is also a stark reminder of how systemic issues make it incredibly challenging for young people to escape cycles of violence. What strikes me most is Lee's perseverance—he was someone who had taken significant steps to change his life, like finishing high school and aspiring to continue his education. It’s so unfair that despite these efforts, things ended the way they did. It's hard not to wonder what more can be done within communities like Roseland to protect young men and women like Lee who want to make positive changes but are continually pulled back by their surroundings.
I can't stop thinking about Lee's little daughter and what she will grow up knowing about her father—a man who worked at a fast-food restaurant to support her, who others saw as a beacon of hope but was taken too soon. For a community that rallied around him, his passing isn't just a personal loss; it’s a collective wound. Sending love and support to his family and everyone who believed in and supported his journey.
