I've been following the tragic case of Heike Poike, her granddaughter Lyrik, and Dakota Smith, and one thing that's been really haunting me is the welfare check that led to their discovery. It's gut-wrenching to think about how close they might have come to being saved. When the officers arrived after Heike didn't pick up her grandson, it was fate that they checked the back door and found it open. I can't imagine the weight on the hearts of those officers walking into such a grim scene. It’s hard to understand how nobody around them noticed anything alarming beforehand, especially given Alexander Tran's documented mental health struggles. It seems like such a failing of the system that someone diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, with such a recent and obvious history of issues, could still be in a situation where things escalated to this level. My thoughts are with the surviving family members and friends of the victims – the shock and pain they must be experiencing is unfathomable. Hoping that as the investigation continues, there will be some form of accountability and more awareness surrounding mental health that prevents such tragedies in the future. Does anyone else have thoughts on the welfare check aspect or how the system might have intervened differently?
