As an outsider looking in, it's hard not to be devastated by the impact this tragedy has had on Julie Ann Burns’ daughters. Losing both parents in such a violent and traumatic manner is something no child should ever have to experience. My heart goes out to them, and I'm hoping that their family can provide the love and support they need to heal moving forward. One aspect of this case that’s been eating at me is how Julie’s cries for help seemed to go unheard. It’s incredibly frustrating to see that despite the clear warning signs and her reports of threats on her life, the system still failed her. The fact that Asman was arrested and then released on bail despite the severity of his actions is beyond perplexing. Why are we, as a society, not doing more to protect victims before situations escalate to this level of violence? Discussions need to continue around the reforms required in the judicial system to ensure better protection for domestic violence victims. Julie’s story is a harsh reminder of the improvements still needed in how these cases are handled. Hopefully, sharing her story can contribute to raising awareness and sparking change.
