I came across some local news articles about William Scott Stanga's disappearance, and there's something that's been on my mind. He was an experienced spearfisherman, out there with people he knew well, familiar waters, and pretty good weather from what the reports say. It makes you wonder if he might have been pushed beyond his limits without realizing it. I've read that even seasoned divers can fall victim to shallow water blackout or other sudden medical issues while underwater. It's such a shame when a seemingly regular day out in the water turns into a mystery. You'd think there'd be a better way to prevent these tragedies, maybe with more safety gear or buddy systems that keep swimmers even closer together. Anyone have thoughts on how we can learn from cases like this to prevent future incidents?
Has anyone been following William Stanga's disappearance off Paia, Maui? I was reading up on the details, and something that struck me was the extensive search operation carried out by the Coast Guard and Maui County Fire Department. It's wild how they covered over 621 square nautical miles, yet still no trace. I wonder if they've considered bringing in underwater drones for places divers can't easily reach or if that's even feasible in such an expansive area. Given that the weather was reportedly mild, I keep thinking about whether an underwater current or sudden medical issue could have been factors. It makes me wonder about the things that could be happening below the surface that we can't see. Just a thought. Anyone else have insights on similar cases where the search ended up finding clues in later searches?
