I can't stop thinking about the toll that the recent spate of violence is taking on the community of Waterbury. The tragic death of Lechard Santos at Bertie’s West Indian Restaurant is one too many. My heart goes out to his family and friends, who must be reeling from this senseless act. What really strikes me is how this is part of a larger trend of increased violence in the city. I know Police Chief Fred Spagnolo mentioned a 28% rise in gun-related crimes, but I can't help but wonder what underlying factors are driving this surge. Is it possible that the strain of living through these difficult times has exacerbated tensions? Or is there something else going on in the community that needs urgent attention? I hope the authorities are not just focused on arresting individuals involved, like Joseph Whitaker, but also investing in initiatives that address the root causes of why people are turning to violence. We can't keep losing lives like this. Does anyone have any insights on what's being done at a community level to break this cycle?
