I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact Jess Sixkiller had on urban Native American communities. It's incredible to consider how he built such a strong network through the National Urban Indian Organization. It’s clear that he was a bridge for many, providing a voice and platform for those who often went unheard.
His daughter Janell described him as a visionary, and I think that word is truly fitting. He didn't just talk about change; he made it happen. It must be so hard for his family to not only deal with his loss but also support his wife through her cancer battle. The strength they’re showing right now is remarkable.
I'm curious about any ongoing community efforts to continue his work. Does anyone know if there are events or programs being organized in his memory? It just feels important to keep his spirit of advocacy alive, especially given everything he achieved and stood for.
