Hello everyone, I’ve always had a deep respect for the men and women who serve in law enforcement, and reading about the case of Deputy Sheriff Alfred Werner really hits close to home. It’s unsettling to think about how his life was tragically cut short while carrying out his duties back in 1895 at Presley Junction. The fact that so little is known about the circumstances surrounding his death and the identity of any suspects is really quite baffling. What stands out to me is the repeated occurrence of law enforcement fatalities in Presley Junction over the years. It seems like such a small area, but it has witnessed so much tragedy involving those who were simply trying to keep their community safe. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for Werner's family back then, left with unanswered questions that still linger today. Does anyone here have any information on how such cases might have been investigated back in the late 1800s? I’m curious about the historical context and what practices might have existed at that time for murder investigations, especially in more rural areas like Crittenden County. I wonder if that might shed any light on why so few details have survived through the years. My heart really goes out to Deputy Werner’s family and to all those who continue to serve and protect today, knowing the risks involved. Stay safe, everyone.
