Does anyone else find it absolutely chilling how determined the young assailant was to escape and continue his criminal activities, even after being sentenced to life imprisonment? I mean, it’s tragic enough that Sheriff Harris lost his life trying to uphold the law, but then to see his killer escape and attempt another crime—it’s mind-boggling. I can’t imagine what Sheriff Harris’s family must have felt, facing the fact that the man responsible for taking their loved one away managed to run free, even if only for a short time. It just really highlights the lack of security and control in prisons back then. While justice was eventually served, albeit indirectly, I hope Sheriff Harris’s dedication and bravery won’t be overshadowed by the chaotic aftermath. Sending strength to those who hold his memory dear.
