I was reading about the Cummins Prison break of 1940, and something really struck me about the role of Claude Martin in this tragic event. It's heartbreaking to think about the position he was put in—just one week on the job as a trustee guard, and he ended up losing his life. It sounds like such a risky and volatile environment, using inmates to oversee other inmates. It's hard not to feel for his family, who were left behind to make sense of this senseless loss. He had four kids who had to grow up without their father because of a system that put him in harm's way. It's so tragic that despite the magnitude of this escape and the clear issues with how things were run, there wasn't any significant change. Makes you wonder, what was the point of it all if nothing improved after such a terrible loss of life? It's just a sad situation all around.
