I came across the tragic story of Faizon Smith, and I can't shake the thought of how his life was abruptly taken away. Being 18 should be about planning for the future, maybe starting college or a job, not becoming another statistic in such a violent weekend. It's terrifying to think how gun violence has impacted neighborhoods like West Garfield Park, where families like Faizon's are left with unimaginable grief. There’s a lot of talk about strategies to reduce violence, but it seems like more needs to be done at the community level. It’s infuriating that young lives are cut short, and families are left to pick up the pieces. What could have made a difference for Faizon? More community centers, better lighting in certain areas, or a stronger law enforcement presence? It feels like we owe it to him and others to find solutions so this doesn’t keep happening. I’m just hoping that these awful events spark some real change, something overdue for neighborhoods across Chicago.
