I've been thinking a lot about how incidents of domestic violence can often go unnoticed, especially among older couples like Mickie and George Kelsey. It's so difficult to wrap my head around the fact that this could happen in a close-knit community like Pine Bluff. I grew up in a neighborhood where everyone looked out for one another, and it's unsettling to realize that someone could be in distress without anyone knowing. Mickie attended the Lemonwood Missionary Baptist Church and surely had friends and a community there. It makes me wonder if there were signs that were missed or if she felt she had no one to turn to. The silence surrounding elder abuse and domestic violence needs to be broken. This tragic event should remind us all to check in on our neighbors and loved ones a bit more often. Sometimes, just knowing someone cares can make all the difference. My heart goes out to Mickie's family and everyone affected, as they must be dealing with unspeakable grief. Let's use this as a call to action to make sure no one else suffers in silence.
