It's so profoundly upsetting to hear about how things unfolded that night in Fayetteville. I've been thinking about the moments leading up to the tragic loss of Trenton Coney. It’s baffling to imagine how a concern for a friend could escalate into such a needless tragedy. From what we know, Trenton stepped in to check on his friend, showing genuine concern—something any of us would likely do. It seems like such a simple, caring gesture. It’s hard to comprehend how that could provoke such an extreme reaction from Rankin. The interactions between people can shift so swiftly from normal to devastatingly irreversible. I hope that Trenton's family finds some measure of comfort in the memory of his kindness and the support of their community during the vigil. They have shown incredible strength amidst such a profound loss. Thoughts and prayers continue to be with them.
