I just came across the story of Jaime and Leny Cervantes, and it got me thinking about the bigger picture here in Chicago. The fact that they were so young, with their whole lives ahead of them, is a reminder of how deeply root issues like gang violence and lack of resources are. One thing that stands out to me is how families in neighborhoods like Back of the Yards have to live with this constant fear and insecurity. It's hard enough just trying to make it day by day, and then to add this kind of violence on top of it... it's just unimaginable. I feel for the families trying to navigate this reality, always worrying about the safety of their loved ones. We need more community support systems and programs that can offer kids alternatives to violence and get them invested in a safe future. It's heartbreaking to see these things become part of 'normal life' in some areas. We need to address these systemic issues head-on to create a lasting change. My thoughts are with Jaime and Leny’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
