It's been over a year since Victor "Junior" Lopez Carrillo's tragic shooting near Central High, and I'm still absorbing the update about the arrest of Jakavien Harrell. I can't imagine the immense relief mixed with ongoing anguish that Victor’s family must be experiencing. This pause, a year long, as they waited for steps toward justice must have been incredibly taxing on their hearts. Victor seemed like such a vibrant young man—with his love for music and video games, and his affectionate nature towards family, especially his mom and nephew, it's hard not to imagine the bright future he had ahead. I think about how tight-knit these families are, and how each family gathering since must have felt incomplete without Junior’s infectious energy. While the investigation continues and the motive remains undisclosed, I hope this arrest brings some sense of momentum towards finding all the answers needed. Sending strength and patience to Victor’s family and friends during this difficult journey. Stay strong, everyone.
